Lock Keeper'S Cottage And Attached Outbuilding At Sandiacre Lock

Lock keeper's cottage and attached outbuilding at Sandiacre Lock date from the late 18th century, with later alterations. The building is constructed of red brick and features plain tile roofs at three different levels, along with brick gable stacks and plain eaves bands. It is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with the northern bay being taller than the other two. There is a single-storey outbuilding attached to the south.

The cottage has a segment-headed doorcase with a plank door on the north side and a segment-headed three-light window next to it. On the south side, there is a small 20th-century window and double plank doors beneath a segmental arch. Above these, there are two two-light 19th-century casements and a three-light 19th-century casement on the north side. The north gable wall, which faces the junction of the River Erewash and the old Derby Canal, features a canted bay window with casements. The outbuilding attached to the south has double plank doors inserted on the north side and a couple of large tie heads. The cottage was likely built around the same time as the Derby Canal in 1795.
