Description

Northgate Lock Keepers Cottage is a lock keeper's cottage built around 1790, likely designed by Thomas Telford. It is constructed of brown brick and features a graded grey slate hipped roof. The south elevation facing the canal has a flush sandstone plinth and four simple brick pilasters. On the ground floor, there are two replaced 16-pane sash windows with stone sills. The first floor has an unequal 12-pane sash window on each side of a blocked sash opening. The eaves are boldly projecting with exposed joists, and there is a short ridge topped by a central brick chimney.

To the west, there is a hip-roofed brick porch, which was probably added later. This porch has a 6-pane fixed light on its outer face and a replaced part-glazed door to the north. The west side of the cottage features a 16-pane sash window on the ground floor and an unequal 12-pane sash window on the first floor. The east side has a blocked window opening on each storey. At the rear, there is a 20th-century wing to the west and a 16-pane window on the ground floor to the east. The first floor has a 9-pane unequal sash window on the east, a blocked central sash opening, and an unequal 12-pane sash window on the west. The interior has not been inspected.
