Description

The City Wall from Bonewaldesthorne Tower to Pemberton's Parlour is a significant part of Chester's city walls, originating from the late 11th to early 12th century. It was altered between 1701 and 1708 to create a raised promenade and was modified again in 1846 to include a bridge for the wall walk, accommodating the Holyhead Railway, along with subsequent repairs. The wall is constructed from coursed red rubble sandstone and features a cast-iron bridge. The north outer face of the wall has a plinth that is recessed three times with weathered caps, while the south face is shear. East of the bridge, an earth bank reduces the exposed height of the wall to 12 courses. There is a staircase, likely from the 18th or 19th century, consisting of 34 stone steps arranged in three flights leading down to the Canal Basin to the north. This section of the wall measures 230 meters in length, with the wall walk being approximately 2 meters wide.
