Description
This description pertains to a section of the City Wall in Chester, which dates from the late 11th century to the early 12th century. It was converted into a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708, with subsequent repairs made over time. The wall is constructed from red coursed rubble sandstone. Approximately 1 meter north of the outer face of the wall, there is a retaining wall made of large red sandstone blocks, likely replacing an earth bank.
The south face of this section of the wall features a 15-meter length with five courses of large stones set back slightly from the adjoining lengths to the west and east. Below the wall walk, there is a continuous course of rounded corbels, which are believed to have supported a former inner timber palisade. This portion of the wall is approximately 80 meters long, and the wall walk is nearly 2 meters wide. It is important to note that St Martin's Gate, built in 1966 to bridge the gap created for the dual carriageway of the inner ring road, is not included in this listing.
