Description
This description covers a section of the city wall in Chester, which is part of the north wall of the Roman legionary fortress. The wall, dating from the late 11th century to the early 12th century, was converted into a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708 and has undergone various repairs since. It is constructed from red sandstone coursed rubble. The outline of the Roman north-west corner tower is indicated by setts embedded in the pavement at the junction of St Martin's Way and Water Tower Street. The medieval wall shows evidence of significant repair work. Near Morgan's Mount, there is a stone stairway with two flights of steps, which may suggest the location of a former tower. This section of the wall is approximately 30 meters long and about 2 meters wide.
