Description
29 King Street is a 17th-century cottage that has undergone alterations. The building features lined render on the first storey, mock timber framing on the second and third storeys, and a brown brick west gable that has been partly rebuilt, with a painted brick rear. It stands three storeys tall and has a replaced recessed door, a recessed 9-pane sash window on the first and second storeys, and a small 12-pane horizontally-sliding sash window on the third storey. There is a raised shield of uncertain significance dated 1773, flush eaves, and a parapet gable. An added one-storey gabled rear wing is present. The rear of the main building includes a 2-pane casement window under a basket relieving arch on the second storey and a mullioned 2-light casement window on the third storey, along with a west chimney.
Inside, the front room has an open fire with an oak beam, while the back room features a blocked corner fire. The rear wing does not have notable features. The staircase includes a 2-storey oak newel with a butted joint, and all the steps are winders. A central oak beam runs from front to back on the first storey and is chamfered on the second storey. There is a cupboard with an oak door facing the stair of the chimney breast. The third storey has two oak purlins on each slope, with one purlin being reused timber and the other scarfed to an oak bracket in the east wall, along with some flat oak rafters. The floorboards, which are now carpeted, are said to be broad and made of oak.
