Description

Lock Keeper's Cottage is an early 19th century cottage located on the Shrewsbury branch of the Shropshire Union Canal. It likely dates from the early 1830s when the Shrewsbury Company planned to widen the locks and bridges of the Shrewsbury Canal to accommodate standard narrow boats. However, only the two Eyton locks and the bridges on the Wappenhall to Shrewsbury section were actually widened.

The cottage is constructed of red brick and features a low pitched hipped slate roof with wide eaves. It stands two storeys high and consists of four bays. The windows on the ground floor are modern casements set in full height round-arched recesses with plain stone imposts, and the entrance bay to the right of the centre is narrower, featuring a modern brick porch. The ground floor windows have segmental arched openings, while at the first floor level, the arches have been infilled with new brick around new casements, and the walls display blind arches. There is also a modern brick wing at the rear.
