Description
The Original Canal Warehouse, built around 1834-35, is the first warehouse constructed at Wappenshall Junction, facing the new basins at the end of the Newport branch of the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction. It was built by the Sutherland Estate as part of their development of the basin. This two-storey warehouse is made of red brick and features a low pitch slate roof with overhanging eaves. The elevations on the south-west and north-east sides are identical, with the central bay in each case being deeply recessed between narrow flanking bays, which allows for a shallow wharf on the canal side with storey hatches at the center. The flanking bays have segmental arched windows with painted brick cills. Notably, the south-east recess retains its cast-iron jib joist.
