Description
This is a circa 1835-40 warehouse, built at the junction of the Newport branch of the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal with the Shrewsbury Canal. It features a through canal dock, with the upper floor supported by arcades over the canal branch. The building is three storeys high and has a gable-ended slate roof with stepped brick eaves. The ridge line extends to cover a hoist in the north-east gable, above a two-storey central hatch opening with a segmental arch. There is a cambered arch opening over the canal itself, and a similar arch supports a towpath bridge at the south-west end. Round-headed windows with gauged brick arches and fixed iron glazing bars are present on the upper floors to the side; some windows on the top floor are blocked. The internal dock has cambered arch side openings to the north-west. Internally, the floors incorporate trap doors, allowing goods to be hoisted directly from barges below. The basin and warehouses were developed by the Sutherland Estate, rather than the Canal Company.
