Description
The former canal toll clerk's office, built in 1835, is a Grade II listed building located at Wappenshall Junction in Eyton-upon-the-Weald-Moors. Constructed by the Sutherland Estate, it was part of the development of the basin where the Newport branch of the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction meets the Shrewsbury Canal.
This well-proportioned, two-storey building is made of red brick and features a broad three-bay north elevation, with the center section projecting forward and showcasing a canted three-window front. The windows are twenty-six foot wood casements, topped with slightly cambered gauged brick arches. The gable-ended slate roof has flat eaves that overhang at the gable ends and is hipped over the canted bay. A large central red brick chimney stack is also a prominent feature. The ground floor windows on the gable ends are set within large round-arched recesses.
