Description

The lock-keeper's cottage on the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal was built in 1829 or shortly thereafter. It is constructed of painted brick and features a roof made of shaped clay tiles. The cottage is two storeys high and has two windows, with a projecting cross-gable on the right side. To the left, there is a one-storey wing that also has a slightly projecting cross-gable. The windows include one small-pane casement and several four-pane casements, although some windows in the one-storey wing have been altered. A square one-storey bay window allows the lock-keeper a full view of the canal. The window heads are cambered. There is a lateral chimney on the right side, a ridge chimney at the junction of the two-storey wings, and another chimney on the left one-storey wing, all of which have diminishing square flues. The cottage is listed for its group value.
