Description

The Brunner Mond Middlewich War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with additions for the Second World War, designed by Darcy Braddell for Brunner Mond. It is made of Portland stone and bronze.

The memorial features a rectangular base with a short approach path and a low boundary wall at the front of the enclosure. It stands in a gravelled memorial garden adjacent to a former sports club, now a community church, and faces south.

The memorial consists of an 8-foot high obelisk on a wide, rectangular two-stepped base, with a flagged path leading from the back of the pavement where there is a low wall with a convex top. The obelisk tapers on all four sides and has three carved channels near the base and a broad cornice near the top. The corners are indented, featuring pendant bronze garlands in the angles below the cornice. The channels and cornice wrap around the obelisk, and the inset angles continue above the cornice at the front but not at the rear. A bronze laurel wreath is attached to the front face above the cornice.

Inscribed below the cornice, with partial black infilling, is the following text:

TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF THE MEN FROM THESE/ WORKS WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 TO 1919

The names of the sixteen Fallen are listed below this inscription in alphabetical order by surname, along with their units, but without ranks. The names are in capital letters, while the units are in lower case or initials, and the inscription is presented in a continuous format rather than tabulated. The lettering is fluid and expressive. Below the three channels is an added inscription in the same style:

WORLD WAR 1939 TO 1945

This is followed by the names of the two Fallen from that war.
