Description
The Trent and Mersey Canal features three locks and two intermediate basins, along with a dry dock off the upper basin, all constructed in 1777 from stone and brick. The locks have walls made of brick and stone, with inset oak posts. They include paired lower gates and single upper gates made of timber, as well as wooden footbridges without handrails, supported by wrought-iron arches. Each pair of locks is separated by a stone-walled basin, which has curved sides to accommodate the passage of boats. The lower lock has a mid-20th century stepped concrete retaining wall along the bank of the adjacent Sanderson's Brook. The upper two locks feature curved flights of stone steps. The dry dock, likely built in the late 18th century and altered since, consists of a brick basin with an entrance from the canal basin that has been replaced with concrete. The dock is still in use and is sheltered by a lightweight dry construction shed built in the late 20th century.
