Lock chamber, gates and leat. 1779, by engineer John Varley, with later repairs. Ashlar, partly rebuilt in engineering brick, with metal and wood gates. Wooden gates to either end have metal reinforced balance beams with metal handrails to top and rack and pinion paddle mechanisms. To the side of each gate is a semi-circle of concrete with brick steps. Much rebuilt leat runs to west side of basin and returns to the canal below the bridge. Built as part of the Erewash Canal.
