LOCK AT SK 484 351

The lock at Bennett Street in Long Eaton, built in 1779 by engineer John Varley, is a Grade II listed structure. It features a lock chamber, gates, and a leat. The construction includes ashlar stone, which has been partly rebuilt with engineering brick, and it is equipped with metal and wooden gates. Although the chamber has undergone extensive brick renewal, it retains its original stone copings. Iron steps are located on either side of the chamber, and metal bollards line the sides. The wooden gates at both ends are fitted with metal reinforced balance beams, metal handrails on top, and rack and pinion paddle mechanisms. Adjacent to each gate, there is a semi-circle of concrete with brick steps. The leat, which has been much rebuilt, runs along the west side of the basin and returns to the canal below the bridge. This lock was constructed as part of the Erewash Canal.
