Description

Green's Lock is a lock chamber and leat located off Green Lane in Ilkeston, built in 1779 by John Varley, the engineer for the Erewash Canal, with some later repairs. The structure is made of red brick and gritstone, with parts rebuilt using engineering brick and concrete. It features timber and iron gates. The lock chamber has seen minimal rebuilding, with brick and gritstone side walls topped with gritstone copings. There are iron steps with tubular rails on either side of the chamber. Each end has a pair of wooden gates equipped with iron reinforced balance beams and tubular iron handrails across the top. The lock operates with a rack and pinion paddle mechanism. Adjacent to each gate is a concrete semi-circle with foot grips. The leat runs to the west of the lock.
