Description
The cemetery chapels, built in 1910 by A J Kilford, the Borough Surveyor, are a pair of structures designed in a late 13th century Gothic style. They are constructed from coursed squared rock-faced limestone with gritstone dressings and feature Welsh slate roofs topped with decorative ridge stacks. The chapels are linked by passages to a central carriageway, which is crowned by a tower and spire.
On the south elevation, there is a central double chamfered Gothic archway, supported by corbels, and flanked by angle buttresses. Above this archway is a 2-light Decorated style bell-opening, a quatrefoil frieze, and four crocketed pinnacles. The hexagonal stone spire is adorned with a band of quatrefoils at its midpoint. Short passageways on either side of the archway contain single lancet windows with hoodmoulds.
The steeply gabled chapels are reinforced with angle buttresses and feature large 5-light windows with geometrical tracery, along with small quatrefoils set within circles above. The north elevation mirrors this design with similar 5-light windows. The side elevations include steeply gabled porches and cusped 2-light windows.
