Description

The war memorial in Ilkeston, dating from around 1920, is constructed of ashlar stone. It features a cenotaph raised on three stone steps and has a square plan with square piers at each corner. Surrounding the cenotaph are twelve tapering stone piers connected by wrought iron railings. The cenotaph itself has a chamfered plinth and a rectangular base with a chamfered top, topped by a rectangular pier with nicked corners and a step at the top. The base is inscribed in relief on the north and south faces with the words "OUR GLORIOUS DEAD," while inset metal panels on the east and west sides list the names of the men from Ilkeston who were killed in the two World Wars. The pier features a wreath on the west side and a chamfered cross on the east side.
