Description

The Hartington War Memorial, built in 1924, is a commemorative structure located at Hall Bank in Hartington, Derbyshire. It is made of limestone boulders and consists of five large boulders, with the tallest one standing upright at the back like a headstone. In front of this headstone are two horizontal slabs, which are roughly squared, and inclined on top of these are two additional slabs featuring smooth worked faces where the names of the Fallen are inscribed. The names of those who died in the First World War are listed on the stone leaning against the tall headstone, while the memorial for the Second World War is positioned to the left. The memorial is set on a slightly raised platform made of randomly paved stones, with stone kerbs marking its edges and roughly shaped stone piers at either end of the street-facing side. Between these piers are two intermediate stone posts that support chains, and the side and rear boundaries are formed by drystone walls.

The memorial is believed to have been erected in 1924, with the names of those who fell in the Second World War added after 1945. It stands on land donated by the Bateman family of Hartington Hall, located on the east side of the village center crossroads. The Hartington War Memorial is significant as it honors the local community members who died in both World Wars and its simple design of roughly-shaped limestone slabs reflects the upland limestone landscape and the local traditions of stone quarrying and working.
