Description

R Stones - General Stores is a market hall that has been converted into a shop, built in 1836. The building is constructed from coursed squared sandstone featuring diagonal and horizontal tooling, with sandstone dressings, rusticated ashlar quoins, and a ground floor. It has a slate roof and stone gable end stacks with plain cornices, along with stone coped gables. The eaves cornice is moulded, and there is a pedimented gable. The structure has three storeys and three bays, with an advanced two-bay section to the east.

On the south elevation, there are three steps leading to a raised arcade consisting of three segmental arches supported by square rusticated piers with moulded imposts. Similar arches are found on the north and south sides. To the west, there is a recessed section with a centrally placed segmentally headed archway that has double plank doors below. Above this, there is a plain sill band with three glazing bar sashes featuring moulded architraves. The third storey has a similar but shallower window with a plain sill band. At the top, in the eastern gable pediment, there is a large plaque decorated with a central figure of a man in a short coat holding scales, flanked by two women, and inscribed with 'JH MDCCCXXXVI'.
