Description
The building is a late 17th century Market Hall located in the Market Place, constructed from local sandstone ashlar. It is two storeys high, three bays wide, and five bays long. Originally, the lower storey served as an open market space with a continuous semi-circular-headed arcade. However, around 1880, this arcade was filled in with windows that do not match the original style and a plain boarded door. There is a string band at the first floor level, and the upper floor features window openings with moulded architraves, now fitted with satisfactory sashes in cased frames, likely from the early 19th century. A heavy, moulded stone cornice with modillions runs along the eaves. The hipped tile roof has undergone significant restoration. A lantern made of Roman cement, probably from the 19th century, has replaced an earlier cupola. The building also includes pedimented dormers and a wooden balustrade surrounding the central flat roof around the cupola.
