Description

The Market Hall is a market hall built in 1873. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble, featuring ashlar quoin strips and dressings, and has a blue machine tile roof with verge parapets. The building showcases an eclectic style that combines classical, Gothic, and Flemish influences.

It has a single-storey, three-bay front with outer, recessed three-light mullioned windows set in panels that have modillions at the head of the rebates. Above these windows, there is a frieze and cornice leading up to the parapet, which is adorned with ball finials at the corners. The central entrance bay is set back and rises to a cusped shaped gable, corniced at the shoulders with ball and obelisk finials, and features strapwork consoles on the flanking parapet.

Inside the gable, there are carved stone arms of Crewe and Harpur, armorial emblems, and a datestone positioned above a painted plaque displaying market tariffs, all situated above a round-arched entrance. The entrance has a moulded surround with imposts and 20th-century doors that include a fanlight. The gable ends feature round-arch windows with simple tracery. The Market Hall serves as a prominent village centre, easily visible from a considerable distance, and is well-positioned in relation to the church to the north.
