Description
The milestone south of Longnor Market Place is an early 18th century stone waymarker featuring a later ball finial. The south-facing side displays the names "BAKEWELL" with a hand pointing to the right and "LEEK" with a hand pointing to the left. The east-facing side reads "BUXTON" with a hand pointing to the right and "ASHBURN" with a hand pointing to the left. The north-facing side shows "LEEK" with a hand pointing to the right and "BAKEWELL" with a hand pointing to the left. The hands indicating directions are designed to look like gauntlet-clad hands.
This stone waymarker is believed to have been erected between 1709 and 1711, predating the later 18th century expansion of the road network due to turnpike legislation. It is a well-preserved example of an early 18th century stone waymarker and is located near several listed buildings, including a cross, making it similar in character to the distinctive guide stoops found in Derbyshire.
