Description
These two houses, now partially converted into a restaurant, were built in 1894 in Hartington. They are constructed from tooled, coursed, squared gritstone with gritstone dressings, and have a plain tile roof. The gables are stone-coped with simple kneelers. A moulded band runs along the first-floor sills, and tall ashlar chimney stacks feature moulded cornices.
The houses are two storeys high plus attics and have three bays. The north elevation has a central, two-storey mullioned and transomed stained-glass stairwell window. Flanked on either side are chamfered doorcases with flat hoods bearing the inscription 'JWB/1894'. The panelled doors incorporate stained glass. Symmetrically placed on either side of the entrance are three-storey canted bay windows with windows on three sides. The ground floor windows have an ogee tracery design on the lower panes, above which are smaller panes of glass. Glazing bar sashes are used in the bay windows. Above the bay windows, a plain stringcourse is present at all levels, with a Venetian window to the front and glazing bar sashes to the sides. The gabled tops of the bay windows project above the roofline. The buildings are included in the list solely for their contribution to the surrounding group value.
