Description
The Baptist Chapel, built in 1858, is a single-storey red brick structure located on the north side of Queen Street in Ilkeston. It features chamfered stone sills and a hipped Welsh slate roof, which is semi-circular at the east end. Each end of the chapel has low, hipped roof bays.
The north and south elevations are adorned with six tall round-arched windows that have glazing bars, set within recessed round-arched panels, creating a blind arcade effect. Each arch contains a window. On the west side, a single-storey room projects out, featuring a doorway on the north side with three glazing bar sashes under wedge brick lintels, and two round-arched windows with glazing bars to the west. The south side has irregular openings.
At the east end, there is a projecting porch bay with a hipped roof. This porch has a tripartite front with pilasters and recessed panels, topped with a dentil frieze. The broad round-arched doorway in the center has keystones and 20th-century doors, flanked by round-arched windows with keystones and 20th-century glazing bars. Above, three round-arched windows with glazing bars are set in recessed round-arched panels. A date plaque on the building reads "GENERAL/BAPTIST CHAPEL/ERECTED/AD 1858."
