Description

The Town Hall, located in Ilkeston, was built between 1867 and 1868 by R C Sutton of Nottingham and is designed in the Italianate style. The building features red brick with sandstone dressings, along with yellow and blue brick accents, and has a Welsh slate roof. It is two storeys high with an east elevation that consists of five bays, where the central three bays project forward.

The structure has a chamfered plinth and banded rustication up to the height of the impost, which continues as quoins to the first-floor entablature and is topped with a moulded stone cornice. Above this is a balustraded stone parapet adorned with urns. On the ground floor, there is a central recessed porch with a round arch, flanked by round-arched windows set within recessed panels, and two additional similar windows on either side. The arches feature polychromatic brickwork, keyblocks, moulded hoodmoulds, and a moulded impost band. The windows are fitted with margin light sashes.

The first floor has five round-arched windows, with the outer ones displaying plain brick tympana. These also include keyblocks, stone hoodmoulds, and decorative stone bands, with margin light sashes. In front of the central window, there is a prominent stone balcony supported by carved brackets, featuring an openwork balustrade and ball finials. There are 20th-century extensions at the rear that are not of special interest.
