Description
Long Eaton Lock is a lock chamber, gates, and leat built in 1779 by engineer John Varley, with later repairs. The structure is made of ashlar, partly rebuilt in engineering brick, and features metal and wood gates. The lock chamber has seen very little rebuilding and has concrete copings. There are iron steps on either side and stone and metal bollards along the chamber's sides. Wooden gates at both ends are equipped with metal reinforced balance beams, metal handrails on top, and rack and pinion paddle mechanisms. Each gate is flanked by a concrete semi-circle with stepping stones. A much rebuilt leat runs to the west of the chamber and returns to the canal below the gates. This lock was constructed as part of the Erewash Canal.
