Description
Sandiacre Lock is a lock chamber, gates, and leat built in 1779 by engineer John Varley, with subsequent repairs. The structure features ashlar stone, although it has been partly rebuilt using engineering brick and concrete, and includes metal and wooden gates. The lock chamber retains its original ashlar on the west side but is mostly rebuilt in brick on the east side. There are iron steps on either side and concrete copings on top. The wooden gates at both ends are equipped with metal reinforced balance beams and metal handrails. The southern gates utilize barrel gearing for the paddles, while the northern gates have rack and pinion paddle mechanisms. Each gate has a concrete semi-circle with stepping stones beside it, and wooden and iron bollards are located along the sides of the chamber. The leat, which is partly rebuilt in concrete, curves off to the west of the lock and returns to the canal below the canal bridge. This lock was constructed as part of the Erewash Canal.
