Description
Hallam Fields Lock is a lock chamber and leat built in 1779 by John Varley, the engineer for the Erewash Canal, with later repairs. The structure is made of red brick and gritstone, with some parts rebuilt using engineering brick and concrete. It features timber and iron gates. The lock chamber has seen minimal rebuilding, with brick and gritstone side walls topped with gritstone copings. There are iron steps with tubular rails on either side. Each end has a pair of wooden gates that include iron reinforced balance beams and tubular iron handrails across the top. The paddle mechanism operates using a rack and pinion system. Adjacent to each gate is a concrete semi-circle with foot grips. The leat runs to the west of the lock.
