Description
The tower of St Bartholomew's Church is a church tower built in 1895 by P H Currey. It is constructed of red brick with gritstone dressings and has a square plan that tapers slightly. The tower features three chamfered stringcourses and a saddleback pantiled roof, with a battered gritstone plinth at the base. The east and west facades, as well as the north and south facades, are nearly identical. On the east and west sides, the ground stage has two tall lancet windows, while the second stage is blind. The tall third stage includes broad pilaster strips on either side of a circular clock face, with a decorative motif resembling machicolation above and small round-arched bell openings at the top. The south elevation features a segmental arched doorway on the ground floor, a small lancet window above it, and the tall third stage with pilaster strips flanking the circular clock face, along with broad louvred bell openings above. The tower is situated almost detached at the north-west corner of the church, which has undergone alterations and is no longer of special interest.
