Description

27 and 29 New Walk, along with Provincial House at 37 New Walk, form an early 19th-century stuccoed terrace that has undergone significant alterations. Nos 31 to 37 have been entirely rebuilt as one structure with a facade designed to mimic the original appearance. The terrace consists of three storeys and an attic, featuring a total of twenty windows, which were originally two-window houses. The ground floor is rusticated, and above it are pilasters between the windows on the first and second floors, as well as paired end pilasters with moulded bases and capitals. These support an entablature that includes a moulded frieze and cornice, topped by a parapet.

The doorways of the former No 30 have been converted into windows, while Nos 27 and 29 feature rectangular fanlights. The windows are set within moulded architraves, with cornices and bracketed cills on the first floor. Nos 27 and 29 have sash windows with glazing bars, while No 37 has aluminium sash windows, including horizontal pivot windows on the second floor. The roofs are slate, and No 37 has an added mansard roof that contains the attic. This terrace is listed as Grade II for its group value.

Together, Nos 7 to 29 (odd) and No 37 (Provincial House) create a cohesive group. They are part of a larger group that includes Nos 1, 3, and 5 New Walk Museum, Nos 47 to 58 and 64 (even) New Walk, along with Nos 59 to 61 (odd) Princess Road West and No 1 West Street, all surrounding Museum Square.
