Description

These are early 19th-century area railings relating to number 81, part of a terrace of houses on King Street. The railings feature spear-headed shafts and linked circular motifs in the lower frieze, with matching detailing on the small gates.

The railings belong to a terrace range dating to 1836, built in stucco with a plinth and bands. The terrace consists of two-storey houses arranged in pairs, with pilasters supporting anthemion capitals separating all windows and doors. The houses have a ten-window front; the windows are sash windows with glazing bars and are set within dog-eared stucco architraves. Each pair of houses has a recessed doorway with paired six-panel doors and rectangular traceried fanlights, accessed by a segmental-headed entry up three stone steps. A plain frieze and cornice extend between the doorways. Number 81 is a corner house facing south, and features a rounded two-storey bow containing a door and window. A plaque inscribed "Crescent Cottages 1836" is set in the frieze below the cornice. This section also has a shouldered stucco architrave above the recessed door, as well as for the ground floor windows; a small rectangular blind panel is located next to the door and central upper window. The roof is slate covered, and includes one later dormer with barge boards.
