Description
New Walk Museum was built in 1836 as a Nonconformist Proprietory School and was sold to the Corporation in 1848 for use as a museum. The architect was J. A. Hansom. This large classical building is constructed of stucco and features a massive tetrastyle portico with giant Tuscan columns. The central entrance door has a small moulded cornice supported by console brackets. There are later additions on three sides: to the left of the portico, a large grey brick extension was added in 1876 by Shenton and Baker, and to the right, a stuccoed addition was made in 1932 by Albert Herbert. The rear elevation includes giant pilasters and a pediment. New Walk Museum, along with No 47 and Nos 58 to 64 (even) New Walk, and Nos 1, 3, and 5 Museum Square, as well as Nos 59 to 61 (odd) Princess Road West and No 1 West Street, form a group around Museum Square.
