Description
The building known as Chain and Adjoining Barn at 1 Meltham Road dates back to 1812, as indicated by a datestone. It is part of a terrace and features a barn that is oriented at a 90-degree angle. The structure is made of hammer-dressed stone with quoins and has a pitched tile roof, complete with copings on the gable supported by moulded footstones. It stands two storeys tall with a basement.
On the south elevation, the ground floor has two entrances with stone surrounds and tie-stones, although one entrance is partially blocked. There is also a single blocked light adjacent to the entrances. The first floor features a three-light stone mullioned window and a two-light stone mullioned window. The north elevation has a five-light stone mullioned window that is double chamfered and a three-light stone mullioned window on the ground floor, with another three-light stone mullioned window on the first floor. Additionally, there is a single-storey lean-to extension with a tiled roof.
Historically, this building served as the Traveller's Rest public house until 1915 and was also known as the Shoulder of Mutton. The adjoining barn, which connects to the house through later infill, dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with quoins and features a pitched stone slate roof. The east elevation of the barn includes a large doorway with a segmental arched head, quoins, and ties, along with a small oculus above.
