Description
Badger Hey Cottages is a terrace of five cottages located on Meltham Road in Marsden. The cottages date from the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the mid 19th century. They are constructed from hammer-dressed stone, featuring quoins and some coursed rubble walling, topped with a pitched stone slate roof. The west gable has a coped design with moulded footstones, and there are four ashlar stacks. The cottages are two storeys high.
On the south elevation, starting from the west, No 1 has a ground floor entrance with a stone surround and tie-stones, along with a three-light stone mullioned window that is recessed. The first floor features another three-light stone mullioned window. No 2 has a similar entrance with a stone surround and tie-stones, and a four-light stone mullioned window that is both chamfered and recessed on the ground floor, with a matching window on the first floor. No 3, which dates from the mid 19th century, has an entrance with a stone surround and tie-stones, two single lights on the ground floor, and two single lights on the first floor. No 4 also has an entrance with a stone surround and tie-stones, two later single lights on the ground floor, and a former ten-light stone mullioned window on the first floor that has been partially blocked to create two three-light windows. No 5 features an entrance with a stone surround, a later two-light stone mullioned window on the ground floor, and two three-light stone mullioned windows on the first floor.
The east gable has a former entrance that is partially blocked, with a stone surround, tie-stones, and a deep lintel on the ground floor, and a recessed three-light stone mullioned window on the first floor. The north elevation includes various lean-to extensions, with the second cottage from the west having a recessed three-light stone mullioned window on the first floor.
There is a barn situated at a right angle to the cottages, featuring a pitched stone slate roof, hammer-dressed stone, and quoins. It has a later extension to the west with a catslide roof. The east elevation of the barn has a large central doorway with a segmental arched head, stone surround, and tie-stones. The north gable includes a small doorway with large quoins and a deep lintel, while the west elevation has two large central doorways, which may be later additions.
