Description

The White Swan Hotel is a distinguished classical building dating from 1858, possibly designed by Smith and Parnell. It is constructed of stone and features considerable decorative enrichment. The hotel stands four storeys high and has seven windows. The entrance is round arched and flanked by engaged Doric columns with carved decoration. The first-floor windows are pedimented and adorned with carving, particularly prominent in the center and on the frieze between the top-floor windows. A large, richly detailed cornice with brackets crowns the building. Although the interior has been altered, the staircase retains a decorative iron balustrade, which is partly encased. The main room on the first floor is of particular interest. The White Swan Hotel, along with its south extension and the Princess Buildings, forms an important group with several other listed buildings in the vicinity, including those on Crossley Street, Wade Street, and Northgate.
