Description
The Esplanade Hotel comprises two distinct buildings situated side by side. The western portion, dating to the High Victorian era, is constructed of painted brick and rises three storeys plus an attic. It features rounded corners at the front and a recessed gabled bay of similar width to the west. The elaborate brick eaves cornice is characterized by paired brackets with intricate diamond cut brickwork and rendered detailing. A dentil cornice on the first floor also displays diamond cut details and a frieze of panels with leaf decoration in relief. The ground floor cornice incorporates bands of Greek Key and dog tooth patterns, while the ground floor itself is banded with rustication and raised on a plinth. The paired round-headed windows have deep voussoirs and keystones, with colonettes featuring foliate capitals between them. The central window, originally a doorway, retains a moulded arch with a masque keystone and recessed panels in the spandrels, displaying elaborate fruit carving. First-floor windows are paired, with colonettes to the corner windows and segmental arches to the central ones. Second-floor windows are single with chamfered edges to moorish-style rendered arches. The recessed bay's ground floor has round-headed windows with moulded arches and masque keystones, flanked by marble columns with heavy basket capitals and fruit decoration. The first and second floor windows mirror the main block, some with rendered arches with incised detailing. The attic has three windows with a common sill, flat arches, and keystones. The ornate cast iron balcony on the first floor of the main block extends to the second floor of the recessed bay, with individual balconies of a similar style on the second floor of the main block. A hipped slate roof tops the main block with two gabled dormers featuring pendant finials, leading to a terrace with matching cast iron balustrade.
The eastern portion of the hotel, dating to approximately 1830, is three storeys high and has a stucco-faced exterior. It includes two bows of two windows each, with a single window in the centre. The building is topped by a main cornice and parapet, with a moulded sill course on the second floor and a first-floor cornice plus sill course. Windows are recessed and are sash windows, some retaining their original glazing bars.
