Description
18 The Esplanade is a building dating from around 1840 to 1850. It is three storeys high and features a stone facade that imitates brick, with rusticated quoins. The roof has double gables covered with slate, and the eaves are concealed by a rendered blocking course, cornice, and frieze. There is a band at the second floor level and a moulded sill course with a frieze below at the first floor. The building has four windows, two of which are in a bow shape on the east side. The windows above the doorway are blind and all are recessed sash windows with later glazing bars, plain rendered surrounds that are stepped at the base, and block sills on the second and ground floors.
The entrance bay slightly projects and features a frieze, with the first floor sill course breaking forward. The recessed door has four fielded panels, two of which are glazed, and is topped by a semi-circular fanlight. The door is flanked by broad rendered pilasters, with a moulded arch springing over into the frieze, which includes a keystone.
