Description
Number 17 George Street, at its corner with Castle Street, dates from around 1840. It is constructed of coursed rubble with yellow brick dressings. The George Street frontage features a rendered parapet with a raised central panel supported by scrolls, a rendered cornice and frieze, and a double-pitched roof. The ground floor is flanked by broad panelled piers, a cornice, and a blocking course. Above this, pairs of yellow brick pilasters with rendered Tuscan capitals flank the first and second floors. The second floor has two windows; one narrow, set between the right-hand pair of pilasters, and a centred window. Both have recessed later glazing bars and segmental brick arches. The first floor has a narrow window to the right, similar to the arrangement above, and a centred three-light bay window with sash glazing, plain strips, a frieze, a cornice, and a boarded apron. A blind window in a frame is present on the left of the ground floor. The central entrance has double panelled doors, with boarding to the right. A plain frieze and cornice run between the piers below the main ground floor cornice. A recessed door with four moulded panels and a rectangular fanlight is located in the right-hand pier. The Castle Street frontage also uses coursed rubble and yellow brick dressings. It has a high rendered parapet and a rendered string course. Five windows are present, with three blind on the second floor and two blind on the first floor, each with recessed sash windows and intact glazing bars, block sills, and flat brick arches. The ground floor has been altered by the addition of a service bay and the insertion of a later window with yellow brick dressings. The building forms a group with numbers 19, 21 (odd).
