Description
This building, at the corner of George Street and Castle Street, dates from around 1840 and forms part of a wider group. It is a three-storey structure of painted brick, with a parapet cornice and a decorative frieze that extends around the inset corner onto the Castle Street frontage, featuring pilaster strips. A block string course is present above the second floor. The George Street elevation has a single window, while the inset curved corner has one, and the Castle Street elevation has three. The windows are recessed and have sash glazing, with later additions of glazing bars. Second-floor windows have a frieze, and the first-floor windows are topped with flat brick arches. A first-floor bay window with three lights, sash windows, and pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice is present on the George Street side, with a plain apron and plinth. The ground floor has a recessed panelled door with a rectangular fanlight and a block cornice, continued by a heavy moulded cornice supported by scrolled and shell consoles above a Victorian shop front that returns along the Castle Street frontage for two bays. The final bay on the ground floor of Castle Street has a window matching the upper storeys, with flanking pilaster strips. Numbers 10 to 20 George Street form a group.
