Description
The Northern Hotel, located at 2-4 Clerk Street in Brechin, was built in 1842. This building features a prominent main corner block with well-crafted coursed stonework, band courses, and contrasting dressings that are two courses deep. It is two stories tall with an attic and has a five-window elevation facing Clerk Street. The central entrance is wide, flanked by coupled pilasters, with a window above it in a slightly projected central bay, and three canted dormers above.
The corner of the building has a quadrant shape with a later arched doorpiece, a recessed door, and flanking windows. The first-floor window is centrally located in a slightly advanced ashlar panel that rises into a chimney stack supported by scrolls. The elevation facing Panmure Street has two windows and a canted dormer. The building features a main cornice and a blocking course. Most of the first-floor sash windows are original, while the ground floor windows have been reglazed. There is a lower two-story, four-window block on Clerk Street, which has an altered left-hand ground floor window.
To the east, there is a later 19th-century range that is not shown on the 1862 OS map. This range is higher, with a two-story, four-window first floor that has arched and keyblocked windows, and alterations at the ground floor. Beyond this, there is a three-story, six-window range on Panmure Street, which includes a large entrance leading to the rear court and was formerly used as stables for the hotel. The roofs are slated, and the rear elevations are pebbledashed.
Inside, the hotel has several notable features, including a former billiard room on the second floor at the northeast end, which has heavy cornices, a plaster-decorated roof, beams, two rooflights, and a 'Jacobean' chimneypiece. The dining room, which has arched windows facing Panmure Street, features a carved chimneypiece, a two-tier cornice, and a central floral boss. There is also an elliptical corner room on both levels.
