Description
3 Clerk Street in Brechin was likely built as a townhouse in 1829 and later adapted for use as the house and office for the agent of the British Linen Bank in 1836. The building was remodeled by the architectural firm Wardrop and Reid in 1878. The 1930s bank extension to the north and the rear extensions to the west are not included in the listing.
This former bank and bank house features a classical design with a 3-bay, 3-storey main block and a slightly lower one-bay wing to the south, creating an L-plan shape. The front is made of coursed ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, while the sides and rear are constructed from coursed squared rubble. It has a deep overhanging cornice at the eaves and cornices above the upper floor windows, with the central window supported by scrolled brackets. The central doorway, which is slightly set forward from the main building line, is adorned with pilasters and a cornice.
The front elevation has timber sash and case windows with mainly 4-pane glazing, while the rear features some small pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are corniced chimneystacks topped with yellow clay cans.
The interior, observed in 2016, showcases fine 19th-century decorative plasterwork in the hall and some upper floor rooms, along with timber 6-panelled doors. One upper floor room features an unusual decorative architrave on a door. The ground floor rooms to the right of the hall, originally designed as a bedroom and later as a dining room, are in separate ownership and have access from number 5 Clerk Street.
