Description
The British Linen Bank, located at 46-48 High Street in Galashiels, was designed by Wardrop and Reid in 1880. This former bank and house, now used for various purposes, is a three-storey, five-bay building with an L-shaped plan in a classical style. The front and side are constructed of squared buff sandstone, while the rear is made of squared rubble, with ashlar dressings throughout. Notable architectural features include a base course, a cornice above the ground floor, narrow band courses at the sill levels, an eaves band course, and a cornice. The building has raised long and short quoins, moulded architraves that are consoled on the ground floor and corniced on the first floor, and raised ashlar aprons on the first floor.
The front elevation is symmetrical, featuring a pilastered bank entrance on the left with a blind balustrade above. To the left of the entrance is a shopfront with plate glass windows and channelled ashlar. The side elevation has regular fenestration on the front block, with a consoled canopied single door on the right. The rear elevation includes a two-storey block that projects to the northeast, showing irregular fenestration.
The building has timber sash and case windows, as well as plate glass and four-pane windows. It features a shallow-pitched piended slate roof with shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks. Access to the upper floors was not available during the survey in 2005, and the ground floor spaces have been modernised.
