Description
The former Ladhope Free Church, now known as St Andrew's Arts Centre, was designed by McKissack and Rowan in 1885 and showcases an Early English Gothic architectural style. The building features a prominent truncated square-plan heavy corner tower and gabled front and side elevations. It is constructed from roughly-coursed whin and sandstone rubble, accented with ashlar dressings and rusticated quoins. The church is oriented southwest to northeast and includes a chamfered base course and a string course at sill level, along with stepped angle buttresses and hood-moulded openings. There are single-storey halls located at the side and rear of the building.
The front (southwest) elevation displays a four-stage tower with mullioned lancets and a low pyramidal roof. It has a central gabled bay with a projecting porch that features a stepped colonnaded doorway. A large five-light central window adorned with Geometrical tracery is also present, along with a lower stair bay to the outer left.
On the side (southeast) elevation, there is a double gabled transept with large tripartite lancets positioned above paired lancets. The building is fitted with leaded windows and has a green slate roof topped with clay ridge tiles, along with ashlar skews.
Inside, much of the original detail is obscured, but the church retains galleries on three sides supported by round arches and quatrefoil columns. Notable interior features include a highly decorative carved timber pulpit, an elder's box, a canopy, and an organ. The ceiling is timber-boarded, while the hall boasts a timber-truss roof with curved members and a stencilled painted ceiling. A timber fireplace with a Tudor-arched surround can be found in the minor hall.
The church includes a gabled single-storey hall at the rear with triple lancets, as well as a later hall to the northwest featuring a mullioned and transomed window and an angled doorway with a crenellated parapet.
Additionally, there are wrought iron railings and gates, complemented by ashlar dwarf walls and square-plan gatepiers surrounding the property.
