Description
The Harrow Inn Public House, located at 22 High Street in Galashiels, was built in 1868. This traditional public house is a two-storey, three-bay structure with a rectangular plan, symmetrically positioned on a corner site. It features a T-plan roof, an external rear stair, and a single-storey ancillary range at the back with a piended roof. The façade includes a corniced fascia above large windows and a central doorway, with a date stone located at the apex of the gable. The building is constructed of painted stugged ashlar, with painted quoins, a base course, and smooth stop-chamfered margins.
The windows are four-pane timber sash and case, complemented by cast-iron rooflights. The roofs are covered with slate, and there is a rectangular corniced end stack with clay cans, along with cast-iron downpipes.
Inside, the Harrow Inn features a well-preserved later 19th-century commercial bar interior. This space is dominated by a central canted timber island bar, which includes pilasters, carved half-fluted columns, and a dentilled frieze with a balustrade. The bar is connected to an intricate glazed timber dual entrance lobby. The interior also boasts decorative arches, cast-iron columns with floral capitals, timber panelling up to dado level, and margined glazed doors.
