Description
The Central Bar, located at 127 Main Street in Renton, is a public house built in 1893. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular building constructed from red sandstone ashlar. The design features an eaves course and round-headed bipartite windows.
On the main elevation, there is an original shopfront framed by pilasters with a bracketed pediment. The fascia displays a modern plastic sign and lettering. Two basket-arched entrances flank a tripartite group at the center, which includes a door and paired round-headed windows, complete with cast-iron window guards. The outer left entrance has a modern door, and plain cast-iron gates are present at both entrances. At the center of the first floor, there is an armorial plaque and a datestone from 1893, with a modern illuminated projecting sign below. The flanking windows have a blocking course above the eaves and decorative applied consoles below the cills.
Inside, the bar features a comprehensive Victorian decorative scheme and room layout. There is an intact off-sales compartment with timber panelled doors and coloured glass insets. The semi-circular panelled timber bar counter includes a brass hand rail, and there is a gantry on the rear wall supported by decorative Ionic columns with inset timber spirit barrels. The ceiling is compartmented with Lincrusta panels and has fine elaborate decorative dentilled cornice plasterwork, while the walls are adorned with timber panelling.
