Description

The Carriers Quarters, located at 8-10 Main Street in Bo'Ness, is a public house built in 1905, which may incorporate elements from 1647. This two-storey, three-bay building features a gabled design with mock half-timbering and is part of an irregular terrace to the west. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar and harl, with a base course, a deep ground floor frieze, a cornice, and an eaves course. The first floor has architraved windows, and stone mullions are present.

On the north elevation, there are broad dividing pilasters with wall-shafts and thistle-carved corbels that separate recessed bays. A panelled timber door with a multi-pane fanlight is located immediately to the right of the centre. To the right, there is a canted window with a round-arched centre light, and to the left, a similar window with two centre lights. A painted sign is found in the further bay, which may have been a blocked door. The full-width frieze features traditional lettering and leads to a cornice with cartouche-style stops, with the right stop marked 'MCMV' and the left with an unclear inscription. The first floor includes a small carved stone, possibly a base for a statue or sundial, to the outer left. The centre bay has a single window above a carved stone dated '1647' and marked 'RSY/I?', which is adjacent to a jettied base with an arrowslit and a shouldered stack piercing the gable above. The flanking bays each have bipartite windows and half-timbered gableheads. There are also two small modern rooflights.

The east elevation features a broad gabled design with a single window positioned high at the first floor.

The south elevation, which is the rear, presents a variety of elements with asymmetrical fenestration, including a forestair leading to a first-floor timber porch and a decoratively-astragalled barred window to the right, also at the first floor.

The ground floor has fixed glazing with multi-pane top lights, while the first floor features uPVC glazing. A modern timber sash and case window on the east side has a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are cavetto-coped harled stacks to the north and a truncated gablehead stack to the east, both fitted with cans. The skews are ashlar-coped with moulded skewputts, and there are mutulated bargeboards with spike finials. A cast-iron downpipe with a decorative rainwater hopper is also present.

Inside, the building has a largely non-traditional decorative scheme from the later 20th century but retains some timber panelling on the ground floor and moulded cornices on the first floor.
