Description
The Masonic Hall, located on Stewart Avenue in Bo'Ness, was designed by Matthew Steele in 1909. This building is a single storey and two-storey L-plan Masonic Lodge, showcasing Steele's innovative architectural style and set on a sloping site. It features coursed bull-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings on the principal elevation, along with bipartite and tripartite windows that have stone mullions and piended roofs.
The southern elevation, which is the principal facade, is single storey. It has a central timber two-leaf door flanked by a pair of sidelights, all set within an advanced gabled portico supported by four severely truncated stone columns topped with a deep parapet. The gable is inscribed with '409 LODGE DOUGLAS'. On either side of the central section are single bay sections with additional pairs of truncated columns, all arranged in an advanced piended section that includes a small triangular dormer. To the right, there is a recessed tripartite window with stone mullions and a further recessed bipartite window with stone mullions, both featuring piended roofs.
The building exhibits a variety of glazing types, including some plate glass timber sash and case windows with horns, as well as small square leaded panes. Some openings have been blocked. The roof is covered with graded grey slate.
The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 2004. The boundary walls and gatepiers include a pedestrian entrance to the south, featuring a pair of circular gatepiers with stylised rounded caps and a low rubble wall. There is also a further square pier to the right with a pyramidal cap.
