Description
Sammy Baird's Bar, located at 44 South Street in Bo'ness, is a public house reconstructed in 1900 by Thomas Peattie of Knowe Park. This two-storey building features three bays and showcases Jacobean architectural details, situated on a corner site. The exterior is finished in stugged ashlar with ashlar dressings. Notable features include a ground floor and eaves cornice, a panelled blocking course adorned with anthemion finials, and a broken ball-finialled pediment. The entrance consists of a roll-moulded door, with shouldered openings on the ground and first floors; the first-floor openings are also architraved and tabbed with moulded aprons. Fielded pilasters with circular details further enhance the façade.
On the north (principal) elevation, there is a two-leaf panelled timber door with a deep plate glass fanlight to the left of centre, flanked by two large display windows. The first floor has regular fenestration, featuring a relief date carved on a shield between the centre and right bays. The northwest (corner) elevation displays a broad two-leaf panelled timber door with a deep plate glass fanlight at ground level, above which is a single window on the first floor, topped by a prominent pediment. The west elevation has a panelled timber door with a deep plate glass fanlight in the bay to the right of centre, accompanied by a window to the left and regular fenestration on the first floor. The east elevation contains windows in the centre and left bays on the first floor.
The ground floor features plate glass glazing in timber sash and case windows, while the first floor has uPVC glazing. The building has a flat roof and cavetto-coped ashlar stacks with some cans.
Inside, the bar area boasts decorative plasterwork cornices, a cast-iron column, two-leaf screen doors, and linenfold dadoes and reveals.
