Description

74 North Street in Bo'ness is a three-storey and attic tenement building, dated 1786, which was restored by William A Cadell in 1983. The building has a rectangular plan and features a shop at ground level, with nepus gables. The exterior is harled with ashlar margins and quoin strips, and it includes cill courses at the first, second, and attic floors, as well as a keystoned doorpiece.

On the north elevation, the bays are arranged in a 2-1 grouping. There is a two-leaf timber door with a three-part fanlight located to the left of center at ground level, with a window to the left and another window to the right. The left bays are covered with a painted timber board. The upper floors have regular fenestration, and there are two smaller windows in the attic.

The east elevation features a broad gable at the center with three bays grouped to the right, except at the attic level. This elevation includes a doorway at ground level with a lintel dated 1786, which has an incised keystone marked with 'JCR' and '17 JM 86'. It has a timber door and a four-part fanlight, with windows in the flanking bays and regular fenestration on the first and second floors. There are two windows to the right and one to the outer left in the attic. The outer right has a broad blank bay, while the outer left has a broad set-back bay with a deep-set timber door in the re-entrant angle, two windows on the first and second floors, and a tiny attic window to the left.

The west elevation, facing Market Street, is asymmetrically fenestrated with a broad center gable and blocked ground floor openings. The windows are replacement timber sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the building features margined, coped harled stacks with a full complement of cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews with scroll skewputts.

Inside, there is a broad stone newel stair with moulded risers, along with some simple shutters and panelling.
