Description

13 South Street in Bo'Ness is a former tolbooth building dated 1750, which was restored in 1981 by William A Cadell Architects. This three-storey, five-bay, L-plan structure has been converted into dwellings with a shop at ground level, forming an irregular terrace to the west. The exterior is harled with ashlar dressings and quoin strips, featuring cill and lintel courses on the first floor and a moulded eaves course, along with a roll-moulded doorpiece.

The south elevation is symmetrical, with the central bay at ground level featuring a two-leaf panelled timber door and a four-part fanlight above, leading to a moulded panel carved with '1750', 'RB', and 'EB'. The flanking bays have windows, with those on the left being enlarged, and there is a chamfered angle to the outer right. The upper floors have regular fenestration.

The east elevation, facing Gibson's Wynd, has a gabled design with two blocked windows at ground level and a small attic window, along with three small pall stones at the ground.

The north elevation, facing North Street, has a boarded timber door immediately to the left of centre at ground level, with a blocked window beyond to the left. There are two windows on each floor above, all enlarged on the left side. To the right, there is a recessed bay with a timber forestair under a slated outshot roof, and three Velux rooflights above.

The building features a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows, and a 9-pane glazing pattern in casement windows. The roof is covered with pantiles from 1981, and there are coped ashlar stacks with cans and ashlar-coped skews.

Inside, the first-floor front rooms retain nearly all of their original fielded panelling, heavy cornices, and moulded stone chimney pieces. The room to the right includes a partly-glazed cupboard with Gothick intersecting tracery, and there is a moulded stone chimney piece on the second floor.
